The PMP exam price went up and the calculation almost nobody does

The exam price went up and, as always happens, the figure going around is not the same everywhere. Searching for one afternoon we found three different versions of the same number, and they do not agree with each other. So we went to the source and here is what PMI publishes today, with no decoration. Along the way comes the calculation almost nobody does before paying, because there is a way to make this increase cost you less than sitting still.

What PMI publishes today

On the official certification page, the PMP exam shows two prices. USD 425 for PMI members and USD 675 for anyone who is not.

Now the important warning, and it is not fine print. PMI’s certification handbook says prices vary according to membership status and according to the candidate’s regional location. That pair of figures is the reference the site shows in dollars, not a universal fee. If you are in Chile, Mexico, Brazil, Spain or Italy, the number they charge you may be another one. Before doing any arithmetic with your own money, log into your PMI account and look at the price it shows you.

And about the increase itself it is worth being honest, because that is part of the service. PMI published no fee change notice, and the earlier prices circulating out there do not agree with one another. We are not going to repeat a number we cannot verify. What is verified is what it costs today, and that is the only thing useful for deciding.

The calculation almost nobody does

Here is the interesting part. The gap between the non-member price and the member price is USD 250. Individual PMI membership costs USD 139 a year.

Do the subtraction. Joining costs 139 and saves you 250. You keep USD 111, and that is sitting the exam only once.

Put another way, joining is worth it even if you never plan to use a single membership benefit. It pays for itself with the exam discount and there is money left over. Other things come with it, such as access to the standards, but the argument does not need them.

There is one detail that ruins the move if you miss it. PMI applies the member rate only to those who obtained membership before paying for the certification. First you join, then you pay for the exam. The other way round does not work and nobody refunds the difference.

The costs people forget

The exam is not the only outlay, and the missing ones are exactly what breaks the budget.

• Retaking the exam. You get up to three attempts within your eligibility year, but the second and third are paid separately.
• Moving the date. If you reschedule or cancel within the 30 days before your appointment, PMI charges USD 70. If you simply do not show up, you forfeit the entire exam fee.
• Changing your mind. There is a refund if you ask within 30 days of purchase and have not scheduled yet. After that, no.
• Keeping the certification. The PMP is not forever. Every three years you need 60 PDUs and a renewal fee. PMI does not publish that amount, so you check it when your turn comes.

Add them up before you start. Someone who sits once and passes spends considerably less than someone who reschedules twice and retakes, and that difference shows up in no headline.

If you were already applying

Three concrete things, in order.

First, check whether you are a member. If you are not and you have not paid for the exam yet, join before paying. It is the most profitable decision in the whole process and it takes ten minutes.

Second, look at the price in your own account and your own currency, not the one you read in an article. Not even in this one.

Third, do not rush to schedule out of fear. The fee is only required after your application is approved, and the moment you pay, your eligibility year starts running.
