How to tell whether your PMP study material has fallen out of date

The PMP exam changed on 9 July 2026. The market, on the other hand, moves more slowly. Books, courses and simulators built for the previous exam are still going around, and several are sold as if they were current. Someone, right now, is studying for an exam that no longer exists.

We do not sell simulators or courses, so we can give you the criteria without anything of ours waiting at the end. What follows works for reviewing the material you already own, and the material you are about to buy.

First, what did not become obsolete

It pays to start here, because alarm sells better than nuance and nuance is what saves you money.

PMI says it expressly on its page about the new exam. If you are already studying with older materials, keep going. The core principles and approaches of the exam remain the same. Elsewhere on that same page it repeats the point from the other side, noting that the new resources amplify topics such as artificial intelligence, sustainability and value delivery, without the underlying principles having changed.

So your book on risk management, on scheduling, on stakeholders or on procurement is still valid in what matters. Throwing it in the bin would be a waste.

What changed is where the weight falls, how questions are asked and which new topics walk on stage. That is not a small thing, and it is exactly what old material will not give you.

What did fall out of date

Three things, and all three are verifiable against the official outline.

The domain split moved sharply. The exam used to be divided into People 42%, Process 50% and Business Environment 8%. It is now People 33%, Process 41% and Business Environment 26%. Material that has you study with the old proportion will send you to study lightly exactly where most of the questions now live.

The question formats expanded. The 2026 outline brings in cases or scenarios as a format of their own, with a full section of the exam dedicated to them, and also graphic-based questions. Both are marked as new in the official document. A simulator holding only single-choice questions does not prepare you for that.

And the mix of approaches is declared. The outline says roughly 40% of the items represent predictive approaches and the remaining 60% is divided between adaptive or agile and hybrid. If your material does not mention that proportion, it was written earlier.

The signals that give old material away

Four quick checks, and none of them asks you to trust whoever is selling it.

• Look for the domain split. If it says 42, 50 and 8, the material was written for the previous exam. It is the cleanest signal of all because those are figures, not opinions.
• Look for the word case or scenario. If the material never mentions a case section or graphic-based questions, it does not cover the new formats.
• Be wary of the PMBOK as the single base. The official outline warns that there are noticeable differences between it and the PMBOK Guide, and clarifies that the exam measures the ability to apply practices with judgement, not to recite the standard. A course presented as a tour of the guide and nothing more is misaligned from the start.
• Check whether the new topics appear. Artificial intelligence, sustainability and value delivery walked into the scenarios. Their complete absence is a date stamp.

If you already bought something

Do not bin it yet. Run it through the four signals above and sort it into two piles.

Fundamentals material is still working for you. Risk, quality, schedule, procurement, team leadership, all of it is explained just as well in last year’s book as in this year’s.

What you have to replace is whatever depends on the shape of the exam. The study plan split according to the old weights, and the simulator that only drills plain multiple choice. That is where old material trains you for a different exam. For the first one we have the change in Business Environment and the mix of predictive and agile, and for the second, the new question formats.

How to check it yourself, for free

This is the part almost nobody mentions because there is no margin in it. The official PMP exam content outline downloads free from PMI’s site, in several languages, with no registration and no payment. It runs about twenty pages and it holds the weights, the domains with their tasks and the question formats with examples.

Open it next to the table of contents of whatever material you are assessing and compare them. If the contents do not cover what the outline declares, you already have your answer, and no salesperson gave it to you.

Outdated material rarely lies. It simply answers, with precision, the question of an exam that has already been sat.
